Game Day Preparation
In order to be sure games start and end on time, there are several things that coaches and managers must do.
Home Team
- Must provide a score sheet if no off ice official is available. (Score sheets will be provided to each town coordinator and will available in the rink office)
- Must fill in the score sheet with the names of players eligible to plan and mark any that are not playing that day.
- Must provide an ADULT to keep score in the scorers box. (If no off ice official is available)
- Must provide and ADULT to operate the game clock (If no off ice official is available) Clock Instructions
- Must provide and ADULT to operate the home penalty box.
Away Team
- Must fill in the score sheet with the names of players eligible to play and mark any that are not playing that day.
- Must provide an ADULT to operate the away penalty box.
Rules
MCYHL games are governed by USA Hockey rules with the following exceptions:
- The amount of time allotted for a game during regular season is one hour for mites and squirts. 1.25 hours for peewees and bantams. The first three minutes are used for warm-ups. Breaks between periods should only be used to switch the goalies, and not used for team meetings. Line changes must be made quickly in order to complete the game on time.
- There is a 10 goal mercy rule. If at any time after 2 full periods of play, the goal differential is 10 goals, the game will end. Teams may practice for any remaining allotted ice time.
- There are no timeouts during regular season games.
- If less than 24 minutes remains in the one hour allotted for the game at the beginning of the third period, (30 minutes for bantams) then the third period will be one-half of the remaining time left in the allotted hour.
- There should be no more than four coaches on the bench during a game.
- If a team is aware that their goalie will be unable to play in a scheduled game, that team may use a substitute goalie from another MCYHL team. This may only occur if a team does not have any rostered goalies available to play. The way a team acquires a goalie from another team for a particular game is by calling the team listed before them on the Jersey Color Chart. You must keep calling the teams listed ahead of you, in order, until you find a goalie.
- If a team arrives for a game wihout prior knowledge that their goalie would be unavailable to play, the team can either play the game with a sixth skater on the ice who does not have goalie privileges (USA Hockey rule 203f) or they can "borrow" a goalie from the team that played in the game slot immediately preceding their game. The goalie MUST be from the same level as the team.
MITE
- All players on the bench should receive equal ice time during the game. While this is not a rule, it is a guideline in keeping with the MCYHL philosophy of participation and skill development for all players. There is however, NO DOUBLE SHIFTING.
- Periods will be 10 minutes and 30 seconds, stop time.
- If the third period has to be shortened as detailed above, the game clock will be set to the nearest 90 second interval that is less than half of the ice time remaining. Example; if there are ten minutes left in the hour then the third period clock will be set to 4 minutes 30 seconds.
- The clock will be stopped and the horn sounded every 1 minute and 30 seconds (including during a breakaway) to allow for each team to change lines. The face-off to resume play will be at the location on the ice of the last play.
- Substitutions will not be allowed during any shift. The only exception to this is if a player is injured during a shift. The player replacing an injured player should not be a player who played on the shift immediately preceding the shift during which the player was injured (i.e., No double shifting).
- Regular Goaltender changes must be made during the 1 minute 30 second line change or between periods.
- Minor penalties are 1 minute. At the time of the penalty the offending player will go to the penalty box. If there is less than 1 minute left in the shift when the penalty occurs the offending player will return to the bench from the penalty box at the end of the shift. A replacement player will go to the penalty box to serve the remainder of the penalty. When the penalty expires the replacement player will return to the ice from the penalty box.
SQUIRT
- Each period is twelve (12) minutes in length during regular season games. Penalty Time - 1.5 min (minor)/ 4 min (major) / 7 min (misconduct)
PEEWEE
- Each period is fifteen (15) minutes in length during regular season games. Penalty Time - 2 min (minor) / 5 min (major) / 10 min (misconduct)
BANTAM, MIDGET
- Each period is fifteen (15) minutes in length during regular season games. Penalty Time - 2 min (minor) / 5 min (major) / 10 min (misconduct)
- Touch up offsides will be used.

- Teams will not switch ends.
- Sudden Death overtime is played as follows:
First Overtime: Three minutes - Four on four
Second Overtime: Three minutes - Three on three. In the event of a penalty, non offending team will add a player for penalty time.
