Our History

Serving the youth of Morris County since 1973.....

The Colonial Hockey League was founded in December 1973 by several Morris County businessmen who recognized the need for organized youth winter sports.

In the beginning, games were played outdoors on the many local frozen ponds that were scattered throughout our county.  Teams were assembled on the ice from each of the neighboring towns and game competition  began.   The games soon progressed from the original supervised "pond" hockey program highly dependent on the weather to the organized game on rink ice that it has become.

The league quickly grew to thirteen town Regions and remained at that level due to the lack of available ice time.

During those years an all star program flourished to encourage the best players on each team to further develop their hockey skills against teams from other counties and states.

The Colonial All-Star teams were composed of the two best players from each region team.  These Colonial All-Star travel teams began playing a modest schedule of games against the local hockey organizations in the area.

As hockey became more popular and more opposing teams became available, the travel schedule grew.  League and travel games flourished and eventually the travel team All-Stars split from the Colonial Hockey League and became the Morris County Colonials (now known as New  Jersey Colonials).

The league games continued, offering the youth of Morris County a place to learn to play hockey and to hone their skills.  Through "learn to skate" clinics, conditioning clinics and finally to competitive team play the hockey minded youth could develop his skills for higher level play.

The Colonial Hockey League became known as the "House League" and now has 15 member "Regions" that serve the youth of Morris County.

The name has since changed to the Morris County Youth Hockey League to better identify with our goals.

Our organization is proud to serve the youth of the county, keeping fair play, good sportsmanship and skill development as foundations for citizenship in the community.

We are a non-profit group of members serving the towns in the Morris County area.  Over 2000 of the county's youth from the ages of 6 to 18 participate in programs run by our association.

Through the years we have provided a learning  experience that has been tempered with competitive play, good sportsmanship and fun.
